If you hate social media

Question: I’ve always thought you need to be on social media to market your business. I feel a lot of resistance whenever I go to write or make a video. Can I do this without social media? It’s so draining.

The truth is, social media is optional. I know too many entrepreneurs with word-of-mouth businesses to say any differently.

But this problem has nothing to do with social media.

I think about it like this.

Before I got diagnosed with celiac’s disease, I was trying to treat all of my symptoms differently: chamomile for stomach pain, rosemary for brain fog, benadryl for hives. None of it worked because I was still eating gluten. As soon as I knew what the real problem was and I stopped eating gluten, all of my symptoms went away.

Your relationship with social media is a symptom – but social media isn't the real problem.

When my clients struggle with social media in this way, they also typically struggle with these three things:

  • They're nervous to price their work and share that price with a client. If the client says it’s too expensive, they question their price, think about changing their offer, and want to reach back out with a lower rate.

  • They frequently don't know what to do and have trouble executing their ideas. Ex: they want to create a free course but can’t decide who it’s for, what content should be in it, how long it should be, when to do it, etc, etc… So they ask other people, see what other people think, and then get overwhelmed or confused when everyone shares different ideas. And then they don’t do anything.

  • They sit down to write a post but they don’t know what to say. They write something, edit it, edit it again, edit it again, and then get frustrated because they don’t even know what they're saying anymore – so they delete it and give up for the day.

When I see these behaviors in my clients, it’s almost always the result of two things:

  1. A lack of belief in themself. (You’ll know this is you if it’s hard for you to believe people would pay a lot of money to work with you or that people want to hear from you.)

  2. Perfectionism. (You’ll know this is you if you have a history of being an A+ student and really struggle when you don't think you're doing it right.)

Here’s the good news.

Mindsets are temporary. They change all the time, whenever you gain more awareness and new experiences.

You can change this. It's simple.

Imagine what it would be like to love creating for social media, always use your first video take, love sharing your mistakes with your people, and never stress out about your engagement.

This is available to you, if you want it. You just need to focus on the real problem.
